This document forms part of, and should be read alongside, the Tandem Tutors Terms of Service.
1. Marketplace markup
- Tutors set their own lesson rates.
- Where a Student is matched with a Tutor through the Platform's marketplace or matching algorithm, Tandem applies a markup to the Student's payment, capped at the lesser of $5 or 10% of the lesson value. This markup is fully disclosed to both parties before booking.
- No markup applies to lessons between a Tutor and a Student the Tutor brought to the Platform independently of the marketplace or matching features.
2. Payment processing
- All marketplace payments are processed through Stripe. By using payment features, you also agree to Stripe's terms.
- Tandem does not store full card details.
- Tutors are responsible for their own tax obligations, including GST registration where applicable, in relation to income earned through the Platform.
3. First-lesson deposits and the money-back guarantee
- First lessons booked through the marketplace require an upfront deposit.
- Students may be eligible for a refund of this deposit if the lesson does not meet the standard described in the Tutor's profile.
- Refund requests must be submitted within 3 days of the lesson and are assessed against the Tutor's stated subjects, experience, and any specific claims made in their profile.
- Repeated unsubstantiated refund claims, or repeated failure by a Tutor to deliver lessons as described, may result in account review or removal.
4. Cancellations and rescheduling
- Students and Tutors can reschedule lessons using listed availabilities, subject to each Tutor's own cancellation notice period (displayed on their profile).
5. Circumventing the Platform
- Where a Student was matched with a Tutor via the marketplace, both parties agree not to move ongoing payment or booking for that relationship off-platform for the purpose of avoiding the marketplace markup.
- Tutors found systematically circumventing marketplace fees may have their listing removed and access to the marketplace suspended. This does not affect their ability to use the free Tutor CRM for students brought independently.
6. Changes to these Payments Terms
- We may update these Payments Terms — including the markup cap, deposit requirements, and refund windows — separately to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
- Material changes will be notified by email or in-platform notice at least 14 days before taking effect.
